In the dead of night, the "hour of the owl," he sneaks Rhaenyra out of the castle and onto the candlelit thoroughfares of the Street of Silk. Disguised, they navigate alleys filled with magicians, tightrope walkers, and eyeless fortune tellers. They drink and watch a bawdy and grotesque bit of theater satirizing the Targaryan dynasty. Rhaenyra learns firsthand how much the common folk would prefer little Aegon, her half-brother, be named heir instead of her. "For one night I wish to be free of the burdens of my inheritance," she says before stealing from a local merchant and sprinting into the night. The episode begins with Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) warily seeing contenders for her hand.

Alicent and Aegon lead the greens, with Rhaenyra and Daemon at the head of their opposition. Aegon — who will become known as Aegon II — rides the dragon Sunfyre, while his brother Aemond One-Eye (Leo Ashton/Ewan Mitchell) rides Vhagar, the oldest and largest Targaryen dragon. The civil war decimates House Targaryen, wiping out nearly all of the dragons and triggering the steady decline that leads to Robert's Rebellion. To the character's credit, Viserys does not budge — Rhaenyra is the heir. But that doesn't stop the Targaryens from splintering into two factions.

Generally, Rhaenyra was supported by noble families who had enjoyed royal favor during her father's reign and possessed strong ties to the crown, while Aegon II rallied those who had been out of favor. Viserys I had signed charters with many powerful Houses in which they swore to accept Rhaenyra as his heir, but at least some of them broke their word after Viserys died. Rhaenyra sent her eldest son Jacaerys north on his dragon to visit the Eyrie and then Winterfell. Before George R.R. Martin’s Westeros endured the Game of Thrones, Aegon the Conquerer set up his House of Targaryen to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

Some took it as a sign that the Iron Throne, which is said to have supernatural properties, rejected her, while others took it as a symbol of her fervor and dedication to her position. One of Rhaenyra's personal tics was also that she tended to nervously play with her hands (or the rings on them) when she was thinking.

Although this description isn’t carried over to the on-screen version of the princess, the show’s iteration does depict many of the Targaryen’s physical traits and coloring. Over the next few years, Rhaenyra diligently serves her father, helping him put down Daemon’s petulant rebellion, selecting Ser Criston Cole for the Kingsguard, and attending small council meetings. Yet when Viserys marries Alicent Hightower, a wedge starts to grow between the old friends. From this position, Rhaenyra watched her father meet with the lords and ladies of the Seven Kingdoms, learning the subtleties of politics and the difficulties of ruling.
This wouldn’t matter on its own, but the new Queen would eventually mother a son named Aegon. This muddied the Targaryen’s line of succession — the Iron Throne was still technically promised to Rhaenyra, but the King’s son would be a clear and potential rival. With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2. Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid. Later, and with additional pushing from her power-hungry father, placing her son Aegon on the Iron Throne becomes Alicent’s driving force. But when taken at face value, her anger seems to be more of a reaction to Rhaenyra’s exploration of her sexuality, ultimately amounting to slut-shamey pearl clutching.
After yet another time jump in episode 8, Alicent and Rhaenyra are once again on the precipice of reconciling — it’s enough to give you whiplash — but the brief truce undercuts Alicent all the more. She comes off as fickle, her convictions liable to change on a whim. It reinforces the insubstantial nature of her anger and the additional development that needed to happen to make her motives less flimsy.
Her first husband was her second cousin, Ser Laenor Velaryon, the son of Lord Corlys Velaryon who served as Rhaenyra's Hand of the King during the Dance, and her first cousin once removed, Princess Rhaenys. She had three sons by him; Jacaerys Velaryon, Lucerys Velaryon, and Joffrey Velaryon. It was widely rumored by her opponents, however, that all three were actually bastards fathered by her lover, Harwin of House Strong. Rhaenyra's second husband was actually her own uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen, her father's younger brother. Daemon was a fierce and powerful warrior, and one of the most skilled and dangerous dragon-riders during the Dance.
When Rhaenyra found out that Aegon had been crowned, she was apoplectic with rage at those who’d stolen her throne. She had herself crowned using her father’s crown and declared war on the Hightowers and the Greens. Following this, Viserys reinstates Otto as Hand of the King, and Rhaenyra leaves King’s Landing with her family, moving to Dragonstone. The feuding family is later forced to reunite at Laena Velaryon’s funeral, during which Aemond Targaryen claims the dragon Vhagar.
